It is so much fun to make naturally dyed Easter eggs! There are so many different natural ingredients you can use and the color can vary greatly from time to time.
Most natural ingredients should cook with a little white vinegar, to help the dye bond with the eggshell. To get a nice deep color, the eggs should preferably dye overnight but if you want light colors a few hours are enough.
On the picture we have used turmeric, yellow onion, red cabbage and coffee. Other common ingredients you can use are red onion, beetroot, tea and blueberries. – There are no rules, just experiment. Take a look inside your fridge, see what you have and let the creativity begin.
Recipe
You will need:
The amount of eggs you want to dye. Boiled as your prefer.
Blue eggs:
0.5 l of water
1 tbs of vinegar
250g red cabbage
Light brown eggs:
0.5 l of water
1 tbs of vinegar
1 yellow onion
Yellow eggs:
0.5 l of water
2 tbsp turmeric
1 tbsp of vinegar
Brown eggs:
2 dl strong cold coffee
1 tsp of vinegar
How to:
- Make your naturally dyes by letting the raw ingredients boil for approx. 15 min. Let cool.
- Add your boiled eggs to the dyes and leave in the refrigerator to the desired color.
If you want to make nice patterns on your eggs you can use the following BEFORE dyeing the eggs:
- Stripes: Tie the eggs with string or rubber bands
- Batik-like lace pattern: Attach a lace band around the eggs
- Pattern or just less color: Paint with a white wax crayon and there will be less color where you draw.
Tip!
We like the eggs naturally matte but if you want shiny eggs, just brush them with a little oil.
