Welcome to a new year and our first DIY of 2021- an Easy Diy Bird Feeder.

Finally a new year! New energy, new opportunities and, not least, a hope of that 2021 will be a better year than 2020.

However, Corona still controls much of our everyday lives. High infection rate means continued home-schooling for our children, limited social circle and something as simple as a hug is still a luxury thing we ache for.

While our amazing nurses and doctors are still working hard ( THANK YOU ALL!!!) – now finally, with a little help of a vaccine, we still need to take care of each other by keeping distance and spending even more time in our homes.

Ok that might not be what we wish for. But let us see things in a positve way. This means (even) more time for DIY, new recipes and both small and large interior design projects. Which are all good things. Right?

A new year also means new dreams and new goals. We (Rosa and I ) have each made a little list of our 3 top personal goals during Corona time and 3 things we rejoice most about when Corona is over. Which ones are yours?

Rosa:
During Corona:
1. Continue winter bathing.
2. Be better at making meal plans
3. Maintain my mental health during home-schooling

When Corona is over:
1. Travel. First to my parents in south France and then ….
2. Give hugs
3. Hold a party

Alexandra:

During Corona:
1. Although it is a bit of a cliche’, one of my goals is to exercise more. 2020 has been a very stressfull year for me in many ways. At the end of the year I realised that exercise, walks and fresh air is the best way for me to  handle stress and stay positive.
2. Read more books. Classics, biographies, cookbooks, self-help…..Just all kind of books.
3. Houseproject – a new terrace and opgrade our garden. The terrace we have now will probably soon fall apart and our garden need a serious make over.

When Corona is over:
1. Travel – anywhere from Stockholm to more exotic and warmer latitudes.
2. Hold a party with more than 10. Hope to bring the tradition of a swedish kräftskiva in our garden back.
3. Just enjoy the feeling that there is no pandemic to control my life and remeber to be grateful for an ordinary everyday.

While we are working on our goals and dreams and waiting for things to get back to normal, we can at least spend our time doing something “hyggeligt”. We hope this Easy DIY Bird Feeder can help you and your kids, if just for a short while, to escape the more or less isoltated everyday by getting outside and just watch the happiness from small birds when they are serving your feast.

Recipe

You will need:

• 500 g birdseed
• 125 g unsalted butter
• 125 g coconut oil
• Cookie cutters
• Ribbon or twine
• Small pieces of straw

Tip!

Remember that different seeds attract different kinds of birds.

How to:

  1. Melt butter and coconut oil in a saucepan.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in the birdseed until well incorporated.
  3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place cookie cutters on it.
  4. Fill birdseed mixture into each cookie cutter. Press the mixture and continue fo fill until you reach the top of the cookie cutter.
  5. Press down a straw, where there should be a hole to the twine. Remember not to make the hole too close to the top, as the figure easily will break.
  6. Allow to solidify in a cool place. Outside (if cold) or in the fridge.
  7. Once the mixture has solidified, remove the cookie cutters and straw gently. Thread a ribbon or twine through the hole and hang the bird feeders in a tree.
